Geophysics in Geotechnical Practice

Course Outline.

The seminar will increase the awareness regarding the correct use of geophysics for noninvasive investigations, structural and geological mapping and ground modelling.

Geophysics can provide an in depth and continuous understanding of both surface and subsurface conditions and can also reduce the risk of underground hazards and optimise budgets..

Course Contents.

  • How to choose the best techniques

  • Key points when scheduling geophysics

  • Using geophysics to manage risk

  • Overview of surface techniques

  • Overview of down-hole techniques

  • Advantages and limitations of techniques

  • Using suites of tools to enhance the data

  • Data handling and interpretation

  • Advances in geophysics

  • Case Studies

Course Leaders.

Kim Beesley
Managing Director, European Geophysical Services

Kim has over 40 years experience in borehole geophysical and video surveying with particular emphasis on water well condition assessment. Kim was a member of the British Standards Committee on Borehole Geophysical Logging for Water Wells and currently lectures and gives seminars to MSc courses run by The University of Newcastle and the Environment Agency. Publications have included the down-hole geophysics chapter of a water practice manual published by the Institution of Water Engineers and Scientists.

Dr. Simon Hughes
Operations Manager and Principal Geologist, TerraDat Ltd

Simon joined TerraDat in 2005 having spent 10 years in volcanological geophysical research and teaching. Having completed his PhD on pyroclastic surges in 1995, Simon went on to a Post-doc research position at the Institute of Geophysics of the National University of Mexico and followed by a period as a Reserach Professor at the State University of New York at Buffalo. On his return to Wales, Simon joined TerraDat as its first (and so far only) Operations Manager. His duties comprise the design and management of a wide variety of geophysical projects that range from regional scale investigations to intensive local site studies.
