CAR 2012: Regulation 10.

The "premises" bit of this regulation text is important, because it implies that only a thorough Asbestos Survey of a building can give you that assurance. Ground Investigation by nature (unless it's in a building/basement etc) cannot come under this description due to taking place outdoors. Therefore the default is the basic level of training which is Asbestos Awareness.

If work will disturb ACMs then Regulation 10 states that further training, appropriate to the work, will be needed. Clearly no GI contractor can honestly say they will never disturb ACMs, as nobody really knows what is underneath their feet until they uncover it. It follows therefore, that Asbestos Awareness training is not enough for on-site technicians to continue working, and because the work is Non Licensed Work (NLW), on-site staff will need task specific training.

Our Asbestos Courses.

Considering what CAR 2012: Regulation 10 states, what does this mean for GI contractors and what asbestos training is required?

Based on the above, Asbestos Awareness for on-site operatives (engineers/drillers etc.) is only of use if the company policy is to immediately stop work when ACMs are found. However, if you want to be able to have your staff continue to work safely and carry on with their work, then your on-site staff will need to undertake specialist training for Non Licensed Work.

Fortunately, we've got you covered.

We can deliver three different Asbestos courses for you and your staff:

  1. A standard Asbestos Awareness course for those who need to tick-boxes and are happy to stop work immediately if ACMs are discovered. Provided you are confident in spotting ACMs on site. If not...
  2. A more robust and specialist Asbestos Awareness for Ground Investigation course which has all of the content of the standard course, but with a greater focus on being able to spot ACMs in a geotechnical environment - including example photos of what to look for.
  3. If you want the full shebang - there is our Managing and working with Asbestos Risk in Ground Investigation course, or MARGI for short. This course provides extensive, specialist, task-specific training in order for you to continue Non Licensed Work (NLW), should you come across ACMs on site.

Each of our courses are available either as an open course at our offices (for all interested delegates - dates can be found on our Upcoming Courses page), or as a bespoke course tailored to your requirements that can be delivered from your offices. Below are details of what content is covered in each course.
